I’ve decided to start a new mini-series on the blog called Photo Session Tips, to help prepare you for your next photo session! Here is Photo Session Tip #1: Go Ahead and Get Dressed Up! (AKA How I Wore a $620 Dress for $50)!
Not sure what to wear for your engagement session? I always suggest dressing to the nines, because getting dressed up does a few things.
1. It makes you feel great about yourself. Putting a little extra effort in just gives you a little boost in confidence every time (I mean at least it does for me!).
2. You can literally never be too dressy (really, think about how gorgeous wedding dresses look in photos!).
3. You often associate how you feel during your session, with your photos once you receive them. If you weren’t super happy with your outfit, you may associate those same feelings with the photos themselves!
It may seem silly to put this much thought into your outfit for photos, but trust me, it really is worth it.
I’ve been in photos myself where I was dressed casually (I didn’t go shopping beforehand, and just threw on what I had which included jeans and a tee shirt), and conversely I’ve taken photos where I went all out on my outfit and rented a Badgley Mischka dress (do I have a slight obsession with Badgley? Maybe, but that’s not the point). I LOVE the ones where I got more dressed up, and I’ve hardly done anything with the ones I put no effort into.
Pictures that I absolutely love by Britney Nicole Photography.
How do you find great outfits at a lower cost? I always direct my clients to Rent the Runway. What I love about their service is that they guarantee that your dress will arrive in time. Not only that, but they give you the option to select 2 sizes! That way you’re almost positive you’ll get something that fits. You can rent gorgeous dresses for a small fraction of the price. (I wore a $620 dress, for just $50!)
I also suggest beginning to look for an outfit as soon as you book a session! Sometimes it takes a few tries before you find the dress that fits just right, and looks the way that you pictured it.
When you book an engagement session with me, one of the first things I do is send you my Engagement Session Style Guide, with tips and tricks on how to prepare for your session – including what to wear! Because I’ve been in your shoes, and I’ve spent hours searching for outfits only to be unhappy with how they’ve turned out on camera.. this is a great way to get an expert opinion and feel confident in preparing for your session! Here’s what it looks like and just a sample of one of the title pages.
Finding that perfect outfit can be a bit of work, but it’s totally worth it when your photos are returned and you’re thrilled with them!
