At the beginning of this month, Luke and I began to pray about what we should give financially to our church. We believe that God has given us so much, that it really is a privilege to give back. As we were praying about it, Luke felt like he heard God say that He would pay off our debt this month. With our 3 trips to the hospital with Zion (that includes his birth), we had some big hospital bills stacking up and it was getting to be a larger number than we were comfortable with. We also felt like we knew the amount that we should give (to us it was a significant amount), so we did that.
A couple days later, I got a text. “Check your mail this morning!” As soon as Judah was up, we checked the mail on our way out to take a walk. I opened up the letter from that person, and guess what – it was a check for the EXACT amount that we gave a couple days before!! We were so thankful and saw God come through for us in such a real way.
We just went about our lives and did what we felt like we were supposed to do, and didn’t see any immediate changes in our debt. We kept praying and believing that God really would do it, and we continued on as normal.
A couple weeks ago, we went in to do our taxes. After we gave him all our info, personal and business expenses, mileage, income, he asked the question. “Do you want to know how much you’re going to receive back from your tax return?” Luke and I looked at each other, nervous that it wouldn’t be a big return (or worse yet, that we would have to pay!). We agreed hesitantly. He turned his computer screen and told us the amount – it was so much bigger than we expected, and we were hopeful that this was the start of paying off our debt!
The time came for Luke and I to sit down and talk about how we were going to spend the tax return money (we wanted to be clear on what we were going to do, before it came in, so we didn’t just waste it). In the end, we realized we still didn’t have enough to pay off the debt because of the large hospital bill.
I had tried going online to pay Zion’s hospital bills, but for some reason it never let me pay them through their service. I figured there must be a glitch in the system, so I called.
I started the conversation, “I’d like to pay the hospital bill for my son, but online it isn’t giving me the option”
“Thank you ma’am, I’ll go ahead and look into that for you” (pause) “I’m seeing the bill you’re talking about, but I’m not showing that anything is due at this time”
“Are you sure?” I asked “There must be a mistake because I’m looking at the bill in front of me and it says its due”
“Would you mind staying on a brief hold while I call financial services? It’ll be just a couple minutes.”
I texted Luke “The hospital isn’t showing a payment due on Zion’s bill.. praying that this is God paying off our debt!” I was hopeful, but not naive. I know companies make mistakes all the time so I didn’t want to get too excited just yet, knowing that there was still the possibility of having to pay a big bill. But at the same time, I know God is faithful to His word, and He really does provide all our needs, like the Bible says!
She came back on the phone shortly after I sent the text. “Hi ma’am, I just got off the phone with financial services. You can go ahead and disregard the bill that you see. You’ve been awarded with the financial assistance program, and you won’t be paying for any services you receive through October 2018. Again, go ahead and disregard that bill, it’s taken care of”
I got off the phone, and immediately broke into tears. Judah looked up at me with concern as he saw the tears, “Baby, mommy is crying happy tears not sad tears. God is proving everything we need!”
Here’s the most amazing part – now that the hospital bills are covered (not just this one, but also the next 2 that will be coming our way for the times we stayed with Zion), the amount that we originally planned to put toward our debt is actually MORE than the amount of debt we had left!! So now our debt is paid off, and we have extra – exceedingly, abundantly above what we could ask or even imagine!!!
Can I just say – God is who He says He is. He really does provide, He really does care, He really does love us. The bible says “Even when we are faithless, He is faithful. He cannot deny Himself”. Even when we’re faithless! Even when we’ve messed up, even when we get distracted or lose our way, He is still faithful to us, and He doesn’t leave us or forsake us. He loves you, and He wants to do it for you too 🙂
